Evangelizing for DINK is cringe

By Scott Tibbs, December 15, 2023

The latest TikTok trend is couples talking about how they have two incomes and no children, and therefore have more disposable income and free time. I am sure that some of these Dual Income, No Kids (DINK) videos are intentional trolling. We should consider that before getting too worked up about it. But for those who are serious, I have a simple one word question: "Why?"

Many of the claims made are easily answered. Couples with children can go on vacations, buy snacks, and have both disposable income and "free time." (Children do sleep, after all.) Yes, there is less responsibility, more convenience and more "freedom" for DINK, but the "benefits" are just as available to families with children as with DINK.

But the bigger question is why are they evangelizing for the DINK lifestyle? If you are fulfilled and enjoying life, why do you need to make videos about it for social media? Are you trying to drive down the fertility rate even more? (Yes, but more on that in a bit.) Going out of your way to justify your life choices and encourage others to make the same choices so they can enjoy the same "benefits" is both strange and cringe-worthy.

Now let's get to the real agenda: The DINK vloggers are little more than "useful idiots" for the Communist government of Red China. TikTok is owned by Red China, so the Communist government has a strategic and political interest in promoting lifestyle choices that drive down American fertility and get adults focused on consumerism rather than building civilization. I have no doubt that the algorithms are being manipulated to drive DINK videos to the front of people's feeds.

So what do we do about it? Some have suggested banning TikTok, especially with concerns that the app tracks activity across your device. That is probably not the right solution. Tracking is something that can and should be fixed at the operating system level - not just with TikTok but with all other apps as well. Hostile foreign governments spreading propaganda will always be a problem, and banning this or that app is not the way to solve it.

No, what we need is teaching about the good that children bring. Start with the Bible, which teaches in Psalm 127:3-5 that children are a blessing from the Lord. But one thing that will not help is mockery and scorn of DINK advocates, especially online. That will only harden them and make them more determined to be DINK. We need a positive message, not a negative one. The most important place for that message is the pulpit. Are pastors willing to be counter-cultural?
