Hypocritical conservatives beclown themselves

By Scott Tibbs, October 2, 2023

Back in July, conservatives on social media were clutching their pearls about Congresswoman Nancy Mace admitting to having sex with her fiancé during a speech to the National Prayer Breakfast. Many of those same "conservatives" then rushed to defend Congresswoman Lauren Boebert for a groping session with her boyfriend in public. The key difference? Boebert was still married to someone else when the scandal broke.

Think about how emasculating this is for Boebert's husband. Not only is his marriage gone, but his wife is getting it on with her new boyfriend in public while they are still married. He must be totally humiliated and heartbroken. These same so-called "conservatives" who have taken the "red pill" condemn feminism and what it has done to men, but they have no problem emasculating Mr. Boebert. This is why people hate politics. This is why people are so cynical. People despise hypocrisy and hypocrites.

I am not defending Mace. Sex should only take place in a marriage between one man and one woman. But Boebert is far worse. The fact that Boebert is "MAGA" and an enthusiastic supporter of Donald Trump should not give her a pass. But that is the difference. Mace has been critical of Trump, who backed a primary challenger against her in 2022 and called her "terrible" and said she "fights Republicans all the time." This is not about morality for the Trumpian Right, but about personal loyalty to Trump. This is not principle. This is idolatry.

Obviously, not all conservatives process moral judgments though partisanship or personal loyalty to Trump. Many do not, and make judgments based on principle and (much more importantly) on Scripture rather than political considerations. That is worthy of commendation, especially in our hyper-partisan age. But there are also those who base their moral "standards" on which political "tribe" an offender belongs to. Those "standards" are unworthy of respect.

Fellow conservatives, this is not how we should act. As important as it is for secular conservatives, it is infinitely more important for Christians. If we are serious about morality and restoring Christian virtue to the public square and the culture at large, we need to be consistent in our condemnation of sexual immorality. Hypocrisy is a stain on the name of Jesus Christ, effectively taking His name in vain with double standards. We should not boil down our "moral standards" to support of or opposition to one man. We should have 100% total loyalty to our Savior, who died on the cross for our sin of hypocrisy.
