Pet Ownership is not slavery

By Scott Tibbs, September 8, 2023

A post on Twitter recently went viral equating pet ownership and slavery, warning that "white men who own black dogs should be an automatic red flag." This may or may not have been a joke, but this is not an uncommon view in the "animal rights" movement. Ingrid Newkirk of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said "pet ownership is slavery."

As the Bible tells us in Genesis 1:27, man is made in the image of God. This is why you cannot raise an animal to the level of a human being, but you can devalue human life to the point where they can be killed. Nazi Germany did this by equating Jews with rats (Judenrat) leading up to the Holocaust, and Hutus in Rwanda said that Tutsis were "cockroaches" before a particularly brutal genocide where people where hacked to death with machetes and Hutus committed mass rapes.

The idea that a pet who lives in a home, gets plenty of food, toys, attention and medical care is worse off than the same animal living in the wild is utterly absurd. We pamper and spoil our pets in this country. According to Forbes, "Americans spent $136.8 billion on their pets" in 2022. Furthermore, 85% of dog owners and 76% of cat owners consider their pets to be a member of the family. More than that, equating pet ownership with slavery is racist. To equate the treatment of pets with the deplorable conditions faced by people in chattel slavery - including whippings, inadequate nutrition and forced separation from family - is a moral abomination.

Do not be fooled: "Animal rights" is rooted in rebellion against the creation order. While earth worship tells us that man is no better than animals, God commands us to have dominion over the earth - including all animals. God loves us and does not want us to see ourselves as "equal" to or lower than animals. In fact, when the Creator Himself died on the cross for the sins of the world, He did that for man, not dogs and cats and certainly not for rats and pigs. Do not worship the creation. Worship the Creator, because He is blessed forever.
