The downstream effects of revival

By Scott Tibbs, July 17, 2023

If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. -- II Chronicles 7:14

On her program on June 29, Liz Wheeler said Andrew Tate is wrong about the purpose of religion: Wheeler says that the purpose of religion is to glorify God and save souls, while Tate (a professed Muslim) emphasizes the role religion plays in ordering society. Wheeler is correct in principle, but the downstream effects of a Christian society is a properly ordered society.

A Christian society and culture would not accept many of the things that are going on in our politics and culture. Once a culture tips toward Christian faith through repentance, revival and evangelism, political and cultural change will flow from that faith as people repent of their sin and turn toward God and obeying His commandments. Tate actually is correct in recognizing the downstream effects of spiritual revival.

(Given the hedonistic, materialistic and deeply sexually immoral way Tate lives his life, I am not sure how he can possibly reconcile that with his his alleged religious beliefs.)

The downstream effects of revival allows Christians to properly re-orient our entire attitude toward politics and culture. I have said before that the ONLY way for conservative Christians to achieve true political change is to pray for revival. Apart from spiritual revival and evangelism, we are just tinkering at the edges as we are headed toward our inevitable defeat. Prayer to God is, by far, the most powerful political weapon we can possibly wield against spiritual wickedness in high places.

But the motivation for that prayer cannot be for political change and certainly not for access to political power. The motivation we must have when we pray for revival is honoring God and love for our neighbor by ushering them into eternal life. The political and cultural change that comes after revival is a positive externality, while our main goal in praying for revival is our love for God, for His Word, and for the souls He died to save on the cross.
