"Judge not" was never a commandment

By Scott Tibbs, June 5, 2023

We have reached the point in our culture where ignorance of the Bible is so profound that simply repeating Biblical doctrine that has stood for 3500 years is seen as "un-Christian." The only principle in Scripture that most pagans (and a tragically large number of Christians) are willing to acknowledge is Matthew 7:1, wildly taken out of context. (More on that later.)

I was accused of being "extremely unchristian" (sic) a couple weeks ago because I said that someone bragging about being a cuckold is sad and noted that the cuck was smug and haughty as he bragged about his "wife's boyfriend." He truly does think he is better than men who are so "fragile" that they cannot imagine allowing their wives having sex with someone else.

Marriage is a creation ordinance, which means it was given to man before the Fall. Genesis 2:24 says that a man shall be joined to his wife and they shall be one flesh. The Lord Jesus Christ confirmed this in Matthew 19:3-6, and the Apostle Paul reiterates this in Ephesians 5:31. While polygamy exists in Scripture, this was never God's plan, and the standard for marriage is one man and one woman. It is a perversion of marriage for the wife or the husband to be openly having sex with someone else with the spouse's full approval.

But we are not to judge, right? Wrong. That is not what Matthew 7:1 teaches. You simply cannot pick a single verse out of context and pretend to have made some sort of doctrinal "point." Jesus continues in verse 5 that we should remove the log from our own eye to remove the speck from the other person's eye. We are commanded to judge without hypocrisy. Furthermore, how can we possibly avoid giving holy things to dogs and pigs of we cannot judge who the dogs and pigs are?

But this is bigger than a few cranks on social media. As The Federalist points out, there is a growing movement for "polyamory." This is a consequence of our culture moving away from Christianity. Polygamy is a pagan practice, one that was erased across the Western world by the advance and spread of Christianity. As Christianity declines, this pagan practice is getting more popular. Unfortunately, it is Christians themselves who are to blame for this, as the lack of opposition to un-Biblical divorce in Christendom is what laid the groundwork for the destruction of the civil institution of marriage in the first place.

The solution, then, is to do exactly what Jesus said: Take the log out of our own eye so we can remove the specks from others' eyes. The Church must repent of its tolerance and then acceptance of divorce. The church must honor our Savior by obeying His commandments. Only then can we have any hope of reforming civil marriage in the wider culture and in our laws.
