Focus the criticism on reality
By Scott Tibbs, August 29, 2019
I am sorry to burst your bubble, but it is time for a Root awakening: No, Donald Trump did not claim to be the "second coming" of the Lord Jesus Christ. Wayne Allyn Root also did not claim either of those things. Trump is a man who loves anyone who effusively praises him. That is a problem, and it is bad for the country, but critics of Trump need to focus their fire on the actual facts, not on an exaggeration of those facts.
First, let's examine what Root said. He claimed that "the Jewish people in Israel love him like he’s the King of Israel. They love him like he is the second coming of God." This is not a claim that Trump is God, but a claim that the Jews love him as if he were God. Now, obviously, that is not good either. Root was likely using hyperbole, but it is still an obnoxious and stupid statement. It certainly does not display the proper reverence for God. But it was not a claim of divinity.
But instead of saying that Trump has an inflated ago (he does) and that it is improper for him to boast about how people "love him"
using such hyperbolic language, some Trump critics have to
inflate what he actually said. And this is the problem with criticism of Trump: He often says silly things that make him look like a dunderhead, and instead of focusing their attack on that actual statement, Trump's critics go beyond that. This forces conservatives to defend Trump against a false or misleading accusation. If Trump's critics would not exaggerate, then they would not be open to that line of attack.
And this brings up another problem with Trump: He demands absolute loyalty to him, and loves effusive praise from anyone. It is not good when the President of these United States has such a fragile ego that he needs exaggerated praise from his supporters, and that he cannot stand criticism even from those who generally support him and vote for his agenda. It is not a good thing when the President of these United States has no sense of proportion regarding praise and criticism, and it is a very, very bad thing that so much of the Republican Party has bowed to this blatant narcissism.
Yes, Trump has been a good President and has implemented good policy. Yes, it is good that Trump is willing to take the fight to the Left. But there are serious negatives to his personality, and if the people in his inner circle really want what is best for him they will work to get him to at least tone that down. Republicans need to stop feeding his ego and bowing to his narcissism.
Sadly, it does not look like they have any intention of doing that.
