You do not get to have it both ways

By Scott Tibbs, June 19, 2019

It has become so routine that it is almost a cliché. When a socially conservative Republican politician or prominent Christian leader is found to have committed sexual sin, they will be (justifiably) excoriated by the Left for their hypocrisy. For the last three years especially, Leftists have been banging the drum of "hypocrisy" for every single conservative who supports Donald Trump, because of his deeply immoral personal life. (This is distinct from actual hypocrites and heretics, who I have also ripped into.)

Yet many of the exact same Leftists who rip into conservatives for supporting Trump also viciously personally attack Mike Pence for following the Billy Graham Rule: Basically avoid being alone with women unrelated to you. A rule that harms no one and restricts only Pence makes some Leftists irrationally angry.

Look, this is really simple: You do not get to have it both ways. Either Mike Pence is bad for his purity, or Donald Trump is bad for his licentiousness. You cannot be taken seriously if you apply opposite standards to Pence and Trump, for the purpose of attacking both men and their supporters. When you attack both for doing opposite things, you reveal yourself to be a hyperpartisan political operative, not someone who is concerned with morality in politics or the advancement of women's careers.

So which is it? Which set of life choices are good, and which are bad? It has to be one or the other. It logically cannot be both, unless the only "principle" you are advocating is that "Republicans are bad."
