President McCain? May it never be.

By Scott Tibbs, November 6, 2004

The USA Today suggests that Arizona Senator John McCain is a contender for the Republican nomination for President in 2008. I would suggest John McCain remember the oath he took to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic" and then to review the First Amendment, which says "Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech".

John McCain broke his oath of office with his tireless efforts to pass "campaign finance reform". The McCain-Feingold "campaign finance reform" law actually banned advertisements from issue-advocacy groups 60 days before the general election. Patriotic Americans on both sides found a loophole in M-F, and continued to exercise their free-speech rights. What was McCain's response? We need to ban them too.

M-F seems like something out of Orwell's 1984. In order to have "clean campaigns", members of Congress passed a law that made it illegal for some issue advocacy groups to criticize federal candidates by name. Members of Congress already enjoy the advantages that come with incumbency, and House members have the added advantage of districts drawn to benefit incumbents. And they want to make it illegal to criticize them when it matters most?

When al-Qaeda murdered 3000 people and collapsed the Twin Towers on September 11th, 2001, they were attacking freedom. We sent American troops to Afghanistan to defend freedom. It is an insult to the Americans who have died for their country to be undermining the very freedom for which they sacrificed so much. People who love freedom cannot afford President McCain.
