Against city funding for Planned Parenthood

Bloomington Herald Times, July 8, 2004

To the editor:

Would you give the tobacco companies a grant to screen for lung cancer, considering cigarettes are the leading cause of that disease? It makes just as much sense for the Bloomington City Council to give Planned Parenthood a $2,900 grant to screen for cervical cancer. Two significant risk factors for cervical cancer are the human papillomavirus (HPV) and early onset of sexual activity among teen girls, both of which are encouraged by Planned Parenthood's advocacy of teen sex.

In 2000, your tax dollars paid for a grant to train Planned Parenthood's "peer educators," who held a forum in 2002 at the Monroe County Public Library on "How to make Prom Night YOUR night." At that meeting, Planned Parenthood promoted its plans to pass condoms out on prom night. Condoms are not effective in preventing the spread of HPV. See: cancer.org.

Last month, Planned Parenthood partnered with MCCSC to hold two meetings about teen sex at Bloomington High School South. MCCSC and Planned Parenthood were determined to keep taxpaying citizens out of the meeting with the teens. What does Planned Parenthood have to hide? Is this an organization that wants to further communications between parents and teens on sex?
