Say no to grant for Planned Parenthood
Bloomington Herald-Times, 05-14-2002
To the Editor:
It has come to my attention that Planned Parenthood is once again applying for a grant from city government. The City Council will award monies from the Social Services Fund in June, and PP is hoping for a piece of this pie.
I oppose this or any other tax subsidy for Planned Parenthood because PP is not only America's #1 abortion provider, but also because it operates an abortion clinic right here in Bloomington. No organization that directly ends innocent human lives should be given taxpayer money for any purpose. Unfortunately, the City Council voted 9 to 0 to give Planned Parenthood $5,000 and $2,000 in 1999 and 2000, respectively, and voted 8 to 1 to give PP $1,394 in 2001.
Denial of this grant should be an easy decision, even for "pro-choice" members of the Council. Shouldn't pro-life citizens have a choice in how our tax money is spent, especially considering the grave moral, religious and philosophical objections many people have against abortion? Council members Jason Banach and David Sabbagh, who represent a party that is largely pro-life, should reconsider their votes of the last three years and vote "no" this time. A "safe and civil city" should not be subsidizing an organization that performs the barbaric act of abortion.
I encourage all citizens of Bloomington to contact the City Council and tell them to deny Planned Parenthood's request for yet another lump of your tax dollars. The contact information for the City Council can be found at http://www.city.bloomington.in.us/council/members.html.
Scott Tibbs.
