To the Editor:
January 22, 2002 will be the 29th anniversary of the Roe versus Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, prohibiting the states from banning a procedure that ends a human life. This was truly a sad day for America. Ever since then, millions of Americans have looked forward to the day that Roe v Wade is overturned while millions of unborn children have been slaughtered.
It is sad that in America, basic human rights are not extended to the most defenseless of our people. Martin Luther King Day falls on the day before the anniversary, showing a tragic irony, that while we have made great progress in extending civil rights to racial minorities, we have taken civil rights away from the unborn.
What can pro-life citizens do as advocates for the unborn? Lobbying your state representatives and state senators for restrictions on abortion is one way to make an impact, and the contact information for them can be found at www.ai.org, the state Web page. Of course, lobbying your congressmen for pro-life legislation is important, too. And if state or federal officials won't take steps to fight the culture of death, then citizens can vote and campaign for new representatives who will.
One thing local pro-lifers can do is attend the 17th Annual March for Life on Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Monroe County Courthouse. Come join fellow pro-lifers and express support for the right to life to be extended to the pre-born.
