Death threats mark a new low in local politics, Part II

By Scott Tibbs, October 20, 2008

Greg Travis (husband of failed Monroe County Commissioner candidate Sophia Travis) is now denying that he posted death threats directed at Republicans on a local discussion forum, even when faced with screenshots of his own posts. On HeraldTimesOnline.com, Travis calls me "a political hit man" and "a one-man political smear machine" for pointing out his threats. But none of that will change the fact that, for whatever strange reason, Greg Travis decided to openly and publicly fantasize about killing Republicans on a local message board. Travis said "We will make sure that the Republican tyrants own their failure, and that the tree of liberty is refreshed with their blood."

The fact is that this is a major news story. The spouse of a countywide elected official is talking about killing members of the opposite party. He is talking about killing people who disagree with him politically. Barack Obama criticized John McCain at the most recent debate for the campaign's failure to crack down on supporters who allegedly yelled "kill him" at rallies, referring to Obama. Obviously, this kind of language is not acceptable. If that is an issue for the Presidential campaign, is it not an issue when the spouse of a countywide elected official is threatening violence?

There is no argument here. The posts by "Mimicus" are clearly death threats against Republicans. Specifically, "We will make sure that the Republican tyrants own their failure, and that the tree of liberty is refreshed with their blood" is clearly a death threat. This is not an "accusation" that we can debate is true or not. The fact of the matter is that Greg Travis posted death threats and I took screenshots of those death threats. Travis can throw a temper tantrum if he wishes, but absolute truth cannot be refuted by temper tantrums.

Some have criticized my previous post, claiming that I have provided no evidence that the poster "Mimicus" is actually Greg Travis (husband of failed Monroe County Commissioner candidate Sophia Travis). But Travis has already pretty much "outed" himself, posting a thread about a mailer he received and then posting the mailer, with his home address, on a local discussion forum. Greg Travis just happens to live at the same address as the one on the mailer. "Mimicus" also posted a scan of a high school yearbook, noting he is in "the top strip." Guess who is in the top strip?

The screenshots are below. Click here for the previous post with screen shots of the death threats.
