The greatest moral issue of our timeTo the Editor:This month will mark thirty years since Roe Vs. Wade, the Supreme Court decision forbidding the states from criminalizing the killing of innocent pre-born babies. Abortion is the preeminent moral issue of our time, just as slavery was 150 years ago. In America alone, over 38 million babies have been slaughtered since 1973. Abortionists continue to kill 1.2 million babies every year in America, and in Bloomington, Planned Parenthood operates an abortion clinic where babies are killed every Thursday morning. There are other issues that are important, but when faced with this unimaginable yet very real level of bloodshed staining our land, it is clear that no other issue even begins to approach the magnitude of abortion. As critical as protecting innocent unborn human life is, we must begin to treat abortion with the importance it commands. No pro-life citizen should cast a vote for a candidate that supports legalized abortion or votes to give taxpayer money to abortionists, even if that money does not go to support abortion. We must lobby our legislators at the state and national level to do what they can to place limits on abortion, and work toward a ban on the heinous procedure commonly known as "partial-birth abortion", a ban supported by a wide bipartisan majority. As a show of local support for unborn babies' right to life, I encourage all pro-life residents of Monroe County to attend the 2003 Rally for Life on January 19th at 2:00 p.m. at the Monroe County Courthouse. |
